Key Learning Areas

There are six Key Learning Areas or KLAs  where children develop a set of knowledge, skills and understanding from Kindergarten to year 6. They are English, Mathematics, HSIE, Creative Arts, Science and Technology and PDHPE. A brief outline of each KLA can be found below.

English

In English students develop skills and understand about the English language and literature. The learning outcomes and content are organised into three stands:

    * Talking and Listening
    * Reading
    * Writing

Children learn how to interact productively with their peers, to speak confidently in class discussions, to listen strategically, to read with comprehension, and to write well-structured and coherent texts.

Mathematics

The K-6 Mathematics Syllabus is organised into six strands - one process strand, Working Mathematically, and the five content strands, Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Measurement, and Space and Geometry. Working Mathematically encompasses a set of five key processes including Questioning, Reasoning, Applying Strategies, Communicating and Reflecting.

Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)

Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) draws upon disciplines such as history, geography, economics, anthropology, archaeology, political science, environmental studies, Aboriginal studies, religious studies and sociology. Students have the opportunity to discuss, plan and apply knowledge and consider what they are learning in the context of their own lives, society, culture and environment. Students will also have scope to develop their own opinion, values and viewpoints, and to understand and respect the rights of others to have different opinions, values and viewpoints.

Creative Arts

Creative Arts in K-6 is designed to enable students to gain increasing understanding and accomplishment in the visual arts, music, drama and dance. The Creative Arts provide opportunities for students to learn to work within and learn about the art forms. The relationships between 'learning to' and 'learning about' are central to the students' development of values about their art forms. Students have the opportunity to perform, appreciate and make artworks, perform and listen to music and drama and to perform, compose and appreciate dance.

Science and Technology

Science and Technology is the learning area in which all students learn about the natural and made environments by investigating, by designing and making and by using technology. Learning in Science and Technology will draw on an contribute to learning related to the other five Key Learning Areas.
