Term 4
It seems quite unbelievable that we have already reached Term 4. Excitement is definitely building among the students as they complete their final weeks of primary school and I am sure that this excitement (and maybe some trepidation) is shared by you as well. This term is shaping up to be busy as you could well imagine. Year 6 will be participating in a High School Preparation course in Week 6 that will help develop skills such as time management and note-taking strategies. Preparation is well under way for our Crazy Day Bazaar which will take place on Thursday 10th December. The Year 6 Final Assembly will also be held on this day beginning at 9:30 am. The Year 6 Farewell will be held on Monday 14th December and I am sure you are aware by now that the theme this year is Disco Fever!
English
Our writing focus for this term will be literary recounts and explanations. We will begin the term by looking at explanations which are used to explain why certain events occur or how things work.
This term we will also be working on developing specific reading strategies that the students need to comprehend a variety of texts. We will focus on strategies such as identifying the author’s purpose, interpreting figurative language and summarising the main idea of texts.
The students have enjoyed reading our class novel called “Problem Child” by James Roy. We are continuing to read this novel in Term 4.
Math
Our Origo units for Term 4 are as follows;
- Adding and Subtracting ‘Messy’ Numbers
- Interpreting and Constructing Data Representations
- Working with Percentages
- Working with Number Sentences Involving Four Operations
- Using Multiplication and Division to Explore Rate, Ratio and Simple Proportions
- Working with 3D Objects
- Using and Applying Division
- Working with Chance
Connected Classrooms
Our Connected Classrooms project to investigate environmental sustainability continues in Term 4. The students are working collaboratively in groups to create an interactive lesson using Smartbook software on one of the following environmental issues;
- Facts and figures of recycling
- Renewable and nonrenewable energy sources
- The lifecycle of waste
- The water crisis and what you can do about it
- Why is biodiversity essential for sustainability
During Weeks 4, 5, and 6 each group will be presenting their lesson to their peers and other schools in our local area using our Video Conferencing facility. This will enable them to consolidate their own knowledge whilst sharing important information about sustainability with other students in our community.
Science and Technology
Our focus for Term 4 is a unit called Visual Ventures. This unit looks at the purpose of advertisements to sell particular products and services. We will spend time analysing advertisements from magazines,
newspapers, television and the internet to identify the techniques that are used to help sell a particular product to a target audience. Using this knowledge the students will work in their Crazy Day Bazaar groups to create an advertisement in a format of their choice to be used to advertise their stall.
Creative Arts
Year 6 are excited about commencing there own "Peoplescape" figures. They are creating cardboard human forms that will transform to represent who they are, utilising their own symbols, text and imagery. This is a nice reflective exercise for them as they look towards completing their primary school years. Once completed the cardboard Year 6 figures will be honour guards decorating the outside walls of the hall on their graduation evening.
PDHPE
Year 6 will be participating in Dance lessons on a Monday morning for 4 weeks beginning in Week 2. These lessons will prepare them for the Year 6 Farewell in Week 9.
At the end of Term 3 Year 6 students participated in a Surf Safety lecture held at school as a part of our Stage 3 Surf Education program. In Week 10 this term Stage 3 will travel to Manly beach to complete the practical component of this course.
Sports Pro lessons have changed to Tuesday this term. PSSA cricket and modball will begin in Week 1 for those students who were in these teams in Term 1. Students staying at school on a Friday afternoon will be participating in Golf lessons.
During PDH this term we will be working through the DET’s Child Protection Program. This program aims to assist students develop skills to allow them to recognise and respond to unsafe situations. We will also be focusing on rights and responsibilities within different types of relationships.
Homework
Students will continue to complete Spelling, Math and Reading homework each week this term. A reminder that your child’s reading log in their homework book needs to be signed each week. If your child is struggling to find books that are interesting them, please encourage them to speak with Mrs Eadie our Librarian as she is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to children’s literature.
Fundraising
Thank you to everyone who baked something for our K-2 Athletics Carnival fundraiser in Term 3. Our fundraising total is continuing to grow and we are close to making a decision about what present Year 6 will be buying for the school. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all parents who have helped during our fundraising events this year; your help has been greatly appreciated.
Crazy Day
As mentioned above, Year 6 has decided on what stalls they would like to run at this year’s Crazy Day Bazaar. As in previous years the students have complete responsibility for purchasing the supplies they need to run their stalls. As such, we have spoken about the importance of running stalls that require as little expense as possible. If you have any concerns about this please come and speak to me.
