Term 4

Welcome back from a well-earned break. It’s hard to believe that it is the final term of 2009! The students seem refreshed and enthusiastic about the term ahead. Term 4 is the “pointy end” of the primary school careers for the year 6 students. This will prove to be bitter-sweet in many ways; as although they will be considering the impact of bidding farewell to friends, they will celebrating the memories created together at Gordon East Public School. This term will also prove to be exciting for the year 5 students as they consider their leadership aspirations for 2010.

Year 6 will be participating in a High School Preparation course that will help develop skills such as time management and note-taking strategies. Preparation is well under way for our Crazy Day Bazaar and the Year 6 Final Assembly which will be held on same day during the normal assembly time. Plans are well underway for the Year 6 Farewell, the theme of which is Disco Fever! It is traditional for year 5 students to attend the Year 6 Farewell and to serve dinner to their seniors.

The year 6 HSIE topic this term is Visual Ventures. This unit looks at the purpose of advertisements to sell particular products and services. Using the knowledge they have gained, the students will work in their Crazy Day Bazaar groups to create an advertisement for their chosen stall.  As in previous years, the students have complete responsibility for purchasing the supplies they need to run their stalls. As such, we have spoken about the importance of running stalls that require as little expense as possible.

Electricity, the year 5 HSIE topic this term, will have a strong Science base. In small groups, students will engage in hands-on activities involving: electrical circuits, conductors, insulators, switches and terminals. As a class, we shall create a simple alarm system and try to power a calculator using various fruit and vegetables instead of batteries. The research project this term will encourage students to explore alternate sources of energy to fossil fuels, coal and oil.

During our Connected Classrooms Project, the year 6 students will continue to investigate environmental sustainability. Working collaboratively, students will create an interactive lesson using Smartboard software on one of the following environmental issues: Facts and figures of recycling, Renewable and nonrenewable energy sources, the lifecycle of waste, the water crisis and why biodiversity is essential for sustainability. Each group will present their lesson to their peers and to other schools in our local area using our Video Conferencing facilities.

The writing focuses this term are explanations and literary recounts. In Reading Groups students will utilize the CARS and STARS comprehension programs to target areas that require attention and read in groups from the Scientist series of books. Our class novel this term is Problem Child by James Roy.

Tania McGurgan will continue to work with the Stage 3 students on the enrichment art program. Year 6 students will be creating “Peoplescape” figures which will be utilized on their graduation evening. Year 5 students will have the privilege of decorating selected poles in our playground with amazing designs.

During PDH this term we will be working through the DET’s Child Protection Program. This program aims to assist students develop skills to allow them to recognise and appropriately respond to unsafe situations. We will also be focusing on rights and responsibilities within different types of relationships.

At the end of Term 3 Year 6 students participated in a Surf Safety lecture held at school as a part of our Stage 3 Surf Education program. In Week 10 this term Stage 3 will travel to Manly beach to complete the practical component of this course.

Sports Pro lessons have changed to Tuesday this term. PSSA is cricket and modball and students staying at school will participate in Golf lessons. Stage 3 will be participating in Dance lessons on a Monday morning for 5 weeks beginning in Week 2 to prepare them for the Year 6 Farewell.
