Novel study:
Following on from the tremendous response to “Double Act” I have decided we will read another Jacqueline Wilson book this term; “The Bed and Breakfast Star.” The text is a masterpiece of narrative writing in terms of its characterisation, descriptions and plot development. The children have also watched an interview with the author on the IWB and found her passion to be inspirational. As part of this unit we will engage in a variety of drama activities to explore the text.
Theme:
This term our theme is a scientific one; ‘Magnets and Magnetism’. The school has purchased a variety of kits to help with the experiments, which the children have already started to enjoy.
Homework:
Our homework will continue to consist of spelling and two pages of “Go Figure” each week. In addition to this I would like the children to research a machine or gadget that uses magnets and write a 1 page article for the magazine ‘How Stuff Works’. Examples include; a CD player, refrigerator, maglev train, roller coaster or cochlear implant. This piece of work is due on Friday of Week 5.
PDHPE:
Our school PE lessons will now be on Tuesdays and the children will be participating in a gymnastics program. PSSA Cricket and Modball will resume on the first Friday of Term 4. Children who stay at school during this time will be participating in a four week golf program. Our Personal Development and Health program will engage with the unit called “feelings about being active” and more activities from the “Mind Matters” program. We will also be talking about children’s rights to feel safe and how to recognise appropriate and inappropriate behaviour.
Creative Arts:
We will be looking at the artwork “Still Life Number 30” by Tom Wesselmann exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York (the mixed-media collage is pictured below). The children will create their own versions of this 3D artwork. Furthermore, the Year 5 girls will attend a series of lessons by ‘Dance to be Fit’ in preparation for the Year 6 Dinner Dance.

A date to put in your diary:
The 2010 swimming carnival will be held on 3rd February Now is a good time to resume your summer swimming lessons in preparation for this carnival.
I am looking forward to a rewarding and memorable final term with 4/5C.
With kind regards,
Linda
