Term 4

Welcome to Term 4! I hope you all had a relaxing holiday and are refreshed ready for another busy term. The following is an overview of what will be happening this term. Please contact me if you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress and I will be happy to arrange a convenient time for a meeting.

ENGLISH

The text types we will be looking at this term are procedures and explanations. These will be learnt using a combination of whole class activities, small group discussions, role plays and listening and speaking tasks. During ‘Activity Groups’ a range of reading and language activities will continue to be implemented this term encouraging  the children to work independently and in small groups to complete set tasks. The class novel this term is ‘Born to Run’ by Michael Morpurgo.

TERM TOPIC

The theme this term will be ‘Stuck on You!’ This topic has a Science focus and will involve the children investigating magnets and magnetism then carrying out various experiments using fabulous Science kits recently purchased by GEPS to deepen their understanding of the topic.

MATHS

In Mathematics we will continue to work through the ‘Origo’ program. The topics to be covered this term are:

  • Using Compass Points and Grid Systems to Give and Follow Directions
  • Using Multiplication to Develop Division Facts
  • Exploring Mental Strategies for Multiplication
  • Developing Written Methods for Subtraction – Introducing the Algorithm
  • Using length, Mass and Capacity to Work with Decimal Fractions
  • Connecting Multiplication and Division
  • Investigating Properties of 3D Objects and Working with Viewpoints
  • Building the Language of Chance and Conducting Experiments

PDHPE

This term the Modball and Cricket competition will continue. Students participating in non PSSA sport will have the opportunity to enjoy a golf program for the first four weeks of term. The PE program will have a gymnastics focus. In class we will be covering ‘Child Protection’. This will provide an opportunity for the children to learn about feeling safe and their right to be safe along with recognizing both appropriate and inappropriate behaviour.

HOMEWORK

Homework will continue to be handed out on Monday and should be returned Friday morning. Please initial your child’s work before it is returned each week. I encourage the children to read aloud at home throughout the week then complete the ‘Reading Record’ sheet. Please continue to use this opportunity to question your child about the characters, setting and plot, ensuring they are fully comprehending the text.
