Term 4

Welcome back to Term Four! It is hard to believe how quickly this year is going past! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable holiday break. I am looking forward to a busy and fulfilling term full of hard work and fun! The following is a brief overview of what will be happening this term in 1G.

ENGLISH

In English, our whole class novel this term will be ‘James and the Giant Peach’ by Roald Dahl. This is an exciting adventure about a young boy who lives with his unfriendly aunts on the outskirts of a big city. James’ life seems bleak until he discovers a magical ‘giant’ peach growing in the backyard. James finds some amazing creatures living inside the peach and together they go on a thrilling adventure across the city! Roald Dahl stories are always exciting and cleverly written and I am looking forward to sharing this story with 1G! Our text type focus for writing and language activities this term will be literary descriptions.

Reading groups will be run on Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9.15 – 9.50. Reading groups with parent helpers will start in week two and run through to week seven. These sessions are an important opportunity for children to focus on continuing to develop reading fluency, vocabulary knowledge and comprehension of texts in a small group situation. Parent helpers are always appreciated and it is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in the day to day classroom experiences of your child. If you are able to help please add your name to our ‘Helper timetable’ in the hat room or contact our class parents.

MATHEMATICS

This term we will continue to use the ‘Origo’ mathematics program. This term we will be using the program to focus on the following topics: extending the count-back subtraction strategy to two-digit numbers; working with fractions; using coins and notes in problem situations; extending the doubles addition strategy; developing the language of chance and conducting experiments. Class work in mathematics will continue to be supported by the ‘Go Figure’ Homework book.

TERM TOPIC

This term our topic is called ‘Our Stories’. The unit focuses on how people, families and communities can share knowledge and experiences through stories, family heritage, oral histories, and artefacts such as photos. We will look at various cultures within Australia and around the world and consider how different people share their stories as a way of connecting people and generations. Students will develop an understanding of Australian Aboriginal heritage and we will look at a range of artefacts used by Aboriginal people.

As part of the unit, 1G and 1A students will have the exciting opportunity of working with students from St Ives High School through our video conferencing facilities and a series of face-to-face art lessons which will be focused on the designs and meaning behind Australian Aboriginal art. As part of this experience, each child will need to find and bring in a rock which will be used in these lessons. The rock should be as smooth as possible and about the size of your child’s foot (or the size of an adult hand).

This term, we will also cover topics from the mandatory Child Protection Syllabus through a series of class discussions.

HOMEWORK

Homework will be sent home each Monday and is to be returned on Fridays for marking in class. Two home readers will be sent home each week. It is important that students consolidate their skills by reading each home reader book a number of times throughout the week. Asking your child questions about the story, the characters and what could happen next in the story will further develop their comprehension skills and support the work we are doing in class.

NEWS

This term, news will be replaced with impromptu speeches. Children will have the opportunity to talk on a variety of familiar topics while building their confidence and learning public speaking skills. Students will still be offered ‘special news / pocket surprise’ on Mondays (even weeks), however are asked to limit their news to two toys or items.
