Term 4
I am looking forward to a busy and exciting term with 1/2A. In Term 4 we will be focusing on ‘Our Stories’ and investigating Aboriginal, Chinese and Christmas stories and traditions.
On Thursday 22 October – Week 1, 1/2 A will be hosting the K-6 assembly at 2.30pm.
On Friday 6 November K-2 will be entertained by Mad Science with a free science show in the school hall.In week 5&6 (16 Nov- 27 Nov) Year 2 will be attending the Special Swimming Scheme each day. The children will be at the pool from 11.30am - 1.20pm for 10 days. Students must wear full PE uniform and bring their swimming costumes, goggles, brush, jumper and a towel every day. The swimming pool is outdoors, so please put sunscreen on your child prior to school. If your child has long hair they must tie it back. All items need to be clearly labelled. Parents will be invoiced in the Term 4 accounts. Year 1 will remain at school with me to continue regular lessons.
On Friday 11 December the class will be performing in the K-2 Christmas concert.
Finally on Tuesday 15 December will be the K-2 Christmas Party at school. They children will enjoy activities throughout the day, a pizza lunch and a performance in the hall called A Jingle Jangle Christmas Show.
Human Society and its Environments
Our Human Society and its Environments unit for Term 4 will be ‘Our Stories’. The students will develop an understanding and appreciation for heritage. We will discuss how important family heritage is; identify Australian Aboriginal heritage; we will classify artefacts used by Aboriginal people and investigate how these are utilized; discover Chinese and other heritages within our class and the significance of these.
English
Our writing program for term 3 will be focused on developing our descriptive writing skills. Students will have the opportunity to write literary descriptions on a range of topics, including the HSIE unit. Literacy groups will continue this term on Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9.15 – 9.55. If you are available to help, please place your name on the parent roster which is in the bag room or contact Mrs Maley.
Mathematics
Year 1
We will be focusing on extending the count-back subtraction strategy to two-digit numbers; working with fractions; using coins and notes in problem situations; extending the doubles addition strategy; developing the language of chance and conducting experiments. We will continue our weekly speed tests and in the last few weeks of term we will be doing revision lessons.
Year 2
We will be focusing on recording mental strategies for subtraction; exploring fractions; connecting multiplication and division; exploring area and volume; conducting and interpreting experiments involving chance. We will continue our weekly speed tests and in the last few weeks of term we will be doing revision lessons.
Homework
Homework will resume in week 1 and end in week 7. Week 8 and 9 will be used for revision and end of term assessments.
Child Protection
Stage 1 will be discussing Child Protection topics according to the NSW Syllabus. During these class discussions, if parents have any concerns regarding these topics, please don’t hesitate to see me.
Sport
Class sport continues to be on Friday from 11.35 – 12.15pm. Year 1 will be doing fitness activities, skills circuits and playing a variety of games to develop fundamental movement skills. Year 2 will be playing a variety of team games, such as soccer and cricket, which aim to consolidate fundamental movement skills and develop skills for year 3 PSSA sport. Sports Pro is on Wednesday, with a focus this term on dance. Please ensure that your child wears his/her sport uniform on both these days.
Music
Year 1 will doing singing groups on Fridays after sport.
Year 2 will continue to learn the recorder. Practice will occur on Mondays and Fridays.
Talking and Listening
We will begin impromptu speeches every second week (even week) this term from week 2 to week 9. The Impromptu speeches will be presented on your child’s news day. The children will learn how to present these speeches in class and will not require any preparation for them from home. These speeches are only going to be for 1 -2 mins on various topics selected at random. Weeks not marked for speeches will be “free” news time.
